Sam Uresin Bio
Sam Uresin, a seasoned executive, is the president and founder of iQuest, LLC. In the last 20 years, Sam has held numerous executive level positions including Chief Information Officer (CIO), Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO) at several companies. Sam is also a veteran Information Technology professional with over 25 years of experience.
Sam’s formal education is in business and technology where he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Management Information Systems along with certifications in programming and IT Infrastructure.
Sam says "It is critically important for a business leader to have an intimate understanding and hands-on experience on those areas where he/she leads others. This keen appreciation of the subject matter creates mutual respect between the leader and his/her team, and only then, a healthy and functional relationship can be established."
In his career, Sam has faced a multitude of challenges, some of which required him to not only make decisions and set the direction but be actively involved in the accomplishment of organizational goals. A good example of this is well documented in a case study conducted and published by the .NET Magazine. Sam says "Post 9/11 landscape was significantly different and put many organizations to the test. In our case, the company I worked for desperately needed solutions for its daily operations. However, due to budget and staff cuts, I found myself in a situation where I had to not only make strategic decisions but also be involved in delivering the final solution. So, I decided to roll up my sleeves and do what was necessary."
This challenge led to the birth of an application that our client uses to run its daily operations today. Sam ended up personally writing over 40,000 lines of code and creating an infrastructure that utilizes cutting edge technologies, including fiber-optic networks, SAN and NAS components and integration with off-the-shelf applications like Microsoft Great Plains.
In the mid 90s, Sam headed a dot com start up as its Chief Technical Officer and developed a multilingual web directory and search engine. The project called List2000 offered its users the same information in seven languages. Sam says "That project presented a few interesting challenges one of which was the Japanese language which has a completely different linguistic structure and character set. As a matter of fact, there are three characters sets used in modern Japanese today and using the language effectively was one of the main challenges. Another challenge was technology. Web technologies were in their infancy at the time." At List2000, Sam not only supervised the technical operations of the company in two countries, he was also personally involved in the development and management of the portal’s usability functions as well as the team of translators from seven countries. "Working with wonderful people from completely different cultures created an incredibly dynamic and creative environment." Sam recalls.
Sam's experience, however, is not limited only to technology. In a recent assignment, Sam led a television production company’s operations comprised of over 100 employees as it Chief Operating Officer. The unique set of services offered by the company required Sam to work closely with creative individuals as well business professionals. In this capacity, Sam developed processes to streamline the organization’s operations and improve the quality of services. During Sam’s tenure, the company reduced the number of customer complaints drastically, built operational tools and processes to improve workflow and communications. Most importantly the company produced award-winning educational and direct response television shows.
